The release of the Tracer Pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has ignited a fair amount of backlash from the community, and it’s easy to see why. While the tracers themselves are visually stunning, the pack doesn’t really offer anything of substance, which has left many players frustrated. However, there’s a valuable lesson here for Call of Duty moving forward.
Firstly, the pack highlights the growing problem with microtransactions in modern gaming. Players don’t want to be nickel-and-dimed for every little feature that should be part of the base game. If Call of Duty wants to stay relevant in an increasingly competitive market, it needs to shift focus back onto providing meaningful content that enhances gameplay—not just eye-candy effects that do nothing to improve the core experience.
The backlash surrounding the Tracer Pack also shows that players are tired of paying for cosmetics that don’t contribute to the gameplay in any way. To avoid alienating its fan base, Call of Duty should look at other successful games that offer customization through in-game progression, rather than forcing players to pay extra for these features. If players had the option to unlock tracers through gameplay, rather than a paid pack, it would have felt far more rewarding.
If Call of Duty can take this feedback to heart and shift its focus back onto providing meaningful updates and progression, it could recover from the misstep that is the Tracer Pack.
